We are happy to present the best essays in our compilation Word-of-ART Booklet.

Please feel free to download (1,4mb PDF) the booklet Word of Art here.

It was interesting and inspiring to read all the essays entered to our Word of Art competition. We hope this will encourage continuous observation and we believe the act of writing itself acts as an editor, to evolve your idea and share it. To this end we are inviting you to write an essay any time on your own subject and submit it to our website. We will aim to have best essays published in national media and contribute to the public debate on Irish art and cultural practice.

All the essays in the current list are interesting with close observation of the “condition of art”, it’s relevance, one’s own experience. An artist may have a different view of galleries, based on their experience, seeing them as not much more than retail outlets. An academic or poor wee art critic may want something else to chew on, like, is it up to what has been happening in New York 20 years ago.

It is interesting how art can have a universal connection from Imola Feldbergs insightful observations in South Africa, or Jan Erik Rekdals observations from memory, to Aurelie Montfrond or Darren Caffrey or Joe Nihilistic experience as artists. Again thank you for all your essays and please let’s keep the conversation going!

Oh what a day it was indeed!! Congratulations to Nastaise Leddy, Audrey McNamara and the superb actors who put on a show 'Ulysses O Rocks!' at the Cross, Main Street, Blackrock on June 16th 2011. In front of 500-strong audience, John Waters has opened the show, which was followed by a song and dance extravaganza showcasing the experiences of Leopold Bloom and his troubled love-life in a scenery of auld Dublin.

Calling all art enthusiasts, art writers, critics, amateur and professional art-lovers and art-haters alike! Have you ever read an exhibition review and could not understand a word? Or maybe you like someone’s paintings but mainstream art-critics seem to keep quiet on them? Or perhaps you are bored with that whole academic jargon and would like to express your love of visual arts in a piece inspired by Gothic novels, Rubber Bandits and Late Late Show mixed-in-one?

Here is your chance of a lifetime: write and share your opinion on any aspect of art. We are launching an open competition for the best piece of writing – send us a short essay (max 500 words) beginning with one of the phrases below: or add your own into.

Spring is in the air and a whole lot of new paintings has just arrived to the Millrace Gallery! As Gerard describes them:

Like the poet Patrick Kavanagh or Keats, the fullness of nature and the human place in it provides more inspiration than academic theory. This for me doesn’t mean trying to copy the landscape, or the flowers in a vase, but to paint almost to discover what is so freely available in nature, as if one was seeking an answer to unlock the prisoner.

We are delighted to announce the lucky winner of the gallery’s competition. A few weeks ago we have asked you a simple (so we thought!) question: As Titan said, one can produce a painting with only 3 colours – which are they? We have received tens of answers – thank you all who took part in the competition.

What a night it was indeed! Despite the weather and a heavy rain we are happy to say the opening of a solo show by Gerard McGourty at No Grants Gallery was a tremendous success.

With their umbrellas and raincoats in hand, our friends and collectors enjoyed a special evening of stories from the childhood, green fields of mystical Ireland and fairy-like creatures, emerging from Gerard’s beautiful paintings…

We are delighted to announce a solo exhibition by Gerard McGourty in No Grants Gallery, Temple Bar, Dublin. ‘Sketches from a Winter Journal’ (Oil on boards & canvases) – depict memories of a childhood, Irish landscape and ongoing fascination by its green fields, symbolic landmarks and... bicycles.

The exhibition runs between February 3rd and 24th, 9am - 5.30pm. Opening night: Thursday Feb 3rd, 6pm.
